The death toll from a massive earthquake in Myanmar has climbed to 694, with at least 1,670 people injured, according to Myanmar's junta government, as reported by AFP.
The 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck on Friday (March 28), causing widespread devastation. Authorities fear the death toll could surpass 10,000 as rescue efforts continue. Images from the capital, Naypyidaw, show large cracks in roads and collapsed buildings, highlighting the scale of destruction.
A rescue worker in Mandalay told the BBC, "The loss of life is severe, and as search operations continue, the numbers may rise further."
Meanwhile, the US Geological Survey (USGS) has also warned that the death toll could exceed 1,000, citing the earthquake's intensity and widespread damage.
According to USGS, the earthquake struck Myanmar's central region, with its epicenter in Sagaing, located 16 kilometers underground. The quake has left a destruction trail, affecting thousands nationwide. Rescue and relief operations are ongoing.
