After more than two weeks of escalating tensions and four days of intense conflict over the Pehelgam issue, India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire.
This ceasefire, primarily brokered through US mediation, took effect on the evening of May 10th.
US President Donald Trump revealed the story of how the two nuclear-armed nations were compelled to halt the war.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Monday (May 12), Trump said that there was a risk of India and Pakistan engaging in a nuclear war following the attack in Pehelgam.
However, this risk was averted through US intervention.
"It would have been very bad if we hadn't stopped a potential nuclear conflict; millions of people would have died. I am very proud that Washington prevented that," he said.
The US President stated, "I realized that the most effective way to ease the tension between India and Pakistan would be trade.
So, I told both of them, 'Listen to me, we want to significantly increase trade with both of you. Stop the tension. If you stop, we can trade; if you don't, we will not engage in any trade.'"
It is worth noting that India has consistently blamed Pakistan for the attack in Indian-administered Pehelgam.
However, Islamabad has denied any involvement in the attack. Despite this, India took several actions, blaming Pakistan without providing any evidence.
Pakistan also took retaliatory measures. The situation became heated, eventually escalating into conflict after two weeks of rising tensions.
The exchange of attacks between the two countries was on the verge of turning into a full-fledged war.
In this situation, after 48 hours of extensive discussions, India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire on May 10th, facilitated by US mediation.
