Sweden is set to introduce much stricter rules for acquiring citizenship, the Nordic country’s government announced on Monday.

The new regulations, which include several new provisions, are scheduled to take effect in June this year, making the path to citizenship considerably more difficult than before.

Under the new rules, applicants will now be required to reside in Sweden for eight years, up from the previous requirement of five years.

Additionally, applicants must meet a minimum monthly income threshold and pass formal examinations to qualify for naturalization.

The country has been progressively tightening its citizenship laws since 2016, following the arrival of approximately 160,000 refugees seeking asylum.

Key Highlights of the New Policy
The new requirements for naturalized citizenship include:

Residency: Applicants must prove at least eight years of residency (increased from five).

Income Threshold: A minimum monthly earning of 20,000 Swedish Kronor (approx. $2,000 USD).

Testing: Applicants must pass a Swedish language proficiency exam and a "Cultural Test" on Swedish society.

Criminal Records: Individuals with a history of crime in Sweden or abroad will face significantly longer waiting periods. For example, a person sentenced to four years in prison must wait 15 years before becoming eligible to apply.

Implementation and Rationale
The new laws are expected to come into force on June 6, 2026, coinciding with Sweden's National Day.

At a press conference on Monday, Migration Minister Johan Forssell stated, "These requirements are much tougher than the current situation because, presently, there are basically no requirements at all."

Regarding the income requirement, officials noted that the threshold is set lower than the average Swedish salary, typically aligning with entry-level or unskilled labor wages. This ensures that most full-time employees remain eligible to apply.

Addressing the new cultural test, the Migration Minister described it as a straightforward assessment of civic knowledge. "If you want to be a citizen, it is reasonable that you should know whether Sweden is a monarchy or a republic," he remarked.

The announcement comes ahead of Sweden’s national elections scheduled for September this year, as the minority coalition government moves toward more restrictive immigration and integration policies.
