Iran's elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commenced a large-scale military exercise in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, according to Iranian state television. The maneuvers come even as Iranian representatives remain engaged in ongoing nuclear negotiations with U.S. officials.

State media reported that the drills are a preemptive measure to prepare for potential "military and security threats." The IRGC has not yet specified the duration of the exercise but announced that commercial shipping through the Strait will be suspended for the duration of the maneuvers.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most vital maritime chokepoints, accounting for the transit of one-quarter of the world’s oil and one-fifth of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually.

Focus on Rapid Response and Missile Capability
The drills are being overseen by IRGC commander General Mohammad Pakpour. According to Iranian news outlets, the primary objective is to test the military's capability for a "rapid counter-response" in emergency scenarios.

The exercise is centered around Abu Musa Island in the southernmost part of the Persian Gulf and its surrounding waters. An IRGC official, speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity, revealed that Iran has recently fortified the island with several missile systems capable of striking targets up to 1,000 kilometers away.

Context: A Year of Escalating Tensions
The timing of the drills is significant, following a period of intense friction between Tehran and Washington:

Regional Conflict: Tensions spiked significantly after Donald Trump’s re-election in 2024, leading to a direct Iran-Israel conflict in June 2025. During that period, the U.S. military launched "Operation Midnight Hammer" against Tehran.

Internal Unrest: Following large-scale anti-government protests in Iran last December, President Trump threatened military intervention. While the protests subsided by mid-January, the U.S. has maintained a massive naval presence in the region.

Naval Standoff: Currently, five U.S. aircraft carriers, including the USS Abraham Lincoln, along with hundreds of warships, are patrolling the Arabian Sea, Red Sea, Persian Gulf, and the Strait of Hormuz.

Diplomatic Track Continues
Despite the military posturing, diplomatic channels remain open. Government representatives from both Iran and the United States are currently in the second round of high-level meetings in Muscat, Oman, which began on February 6.

The talks are focused on a potential nuclear agreement that would see the lifting of sanctions in exchange for Iranian concessions.
