In a seismic escalation following military strikes by the United States and Israel, the Iranian Navy has officially announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

In a formal statement, Iranian authorities declared that no vessels will be permitted to transit the strategic waterway until further notice.

As one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, the closure of the Strait is expected to send shockwaves through the global economy.

The World’s Energy Jugular
The Strait of Hormuz is the primary artery for global oil supplies, connecting the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman to the Arabian Sea.

Bordered by Iran on one side and Oman on the other, the narrow passage is the only exit for massive energy exports from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, The United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain.

Catastrophic Economic Warnings
Market experts are sounding the alarm over the potential for an unprecedented spike in energy costs. While crude oil currently trades near $80 per barrel, analysts warn that a prolonged blockade could drive prices as high as $250 per barrel.

The scale of the disruption is underscored by the following statistics:

Oil: Approximately 15–20% of the world’s total oil consumption passes through this route daily.

Natural Gas: More than 30% of the world’s Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) is transported through the Strait.

Traffic Volume: Between 200 to 300 vessels transit the passage daily; during peak hours, a ship passes through every few minutes.

Impact on Asia and China
Asian economies are set to be the hardest hit by the closure. Roughly 82% of the oil flowing through the Strait is destined for Asian markets, with the remainder heading to Europe.

Specifically, China relies on this single route for nearly one-quarter of its total LNG imports.

With the "World's Gasoline Station" effectively boarded up, the international community faces a looming supply chain crisis that could paralyze global manufacturing and transport sectors.
