Tensions have surged across the Middle East following dramatic claims regarding Iran’s top leadership.
On Wednesday (March 4), the Iran-based news outlet Iran International reported that the Assembly of Experts has elected Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, the son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the country's new Supreme Leader following his father’s death.
According to the report, the decision was heavily influenced by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). However, no official confirmation has been issued by Iranian state media or government officials.
Earlier, the Fars News Agency reported that 86-year-old Ayatollah Khamenei was killed in strikes carried out by the United States and Israel.
The report stated he is to be buried at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad, though a specific date for the funeral has not been announced.
Attacks on U.S. Diplomatic Missions
In a related escalation, local authorities in the United Arab Emirates reported a drone attack near the U.S. Consulate building in Dubai.
Citing eyewitnesses, Reuters reported plumes of smoke rising from the area surrounding the consulate following the strike.
A statement from the Dubai Media Office confirmed that while the drone attack ignited a fire, it was quickly brought under control, and no casualties were reported.
This follows reports of a similar attack on the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. No fatalities were reported in that incident either.
Analysts warn that these rapidly unfolding events have pushed the Middle East toward a major new geopolitical crisis.
