The first major attempt to transform the temporary ceasefire between Iran and the United States into a permanent settlement has failed.
Following 21 hours of grueling negotiations in the Pakistani capital, the American delegation is returning to Washington without an agreement, marking a significant setback after 38 days of bloody conflict.
U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance confirmed the deadlock, stating that the impasse arose after Tehran refused to accept the conditions laid out by Washington.
Negotiation Breakdown
Despite the failure to reach a consensus, Vance praised the Pakistani government for its hospitality and mediation efforts. "Pakistan did an excellent job.
They tried their best to bridge the gap," Vance said. "We spoke directly, which is a positive step, but ultimately we could not agree on fundamental issues."
The Vice President characterized the lack of a deal as a grim omen for Tehran.
"We were clear about our 'red lines.' The Iranian side chose not to accept our terms. This is much worse news for Iran than it is for the United States," Vance remarked.
The Nuclear Stumbling Block
At the heart of the disagreement lies Iran's nuclear capability. Vance reiterated that President Trump’s primary objective is to ensure Iran can never develop nuclear weapons.

"We required a permanent and fundamental commitment that they would not acquire the necessary equipment or technology. We have yet to see evidence of long-term goodwill from their side," Vance explained.
Reports indicate the U.S. delegation consulted with President Donald Trump at least 12 times during the 21-hour session. Washington has reportedly extended a "final and best" offer, the fate of which now rests entirely on Tehran's decision.

The collapse of these talks follows a volatile period in the region:
February 6 – 27: Initial 21-day dialogue ends without an agreement.
February 28: The U.S. launches "Operation Epic Fury," while Israel initiates "Operation Roaring Lion." The strikes resulted in the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and over 3,000 Iranians.
Iranian Counter-Response: Tehran retaliated with drone and missile strikes, disrupting Israeli and U.S. defense systems and seizing control of the Strait of Hormuz, causing a collapse in U.S. oil trade.
April 7: A 15-day temporary ceasefire was brokered by Pakistan, leading to the Islamabad summit.
Tensions Reignite
The peace process was further poisoned by recent Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon, which killed over 300 civilians.
While Israeli officials claim these strikes were coordinated with the Trump administration, the move has cast doubt on U.S. neutrality as a negotiator.
With the U.S. delegation returning empty-handed and Tehran declaring military readiness for "any situation," fears are mounting that the temporary ceasefire may shatter, pushing the Middle East back toward the brink of total war.
