Following the collapse of peace talks in Islamabad, Iran has leveled sharp accusations against Washington, claiming the United States is seeking "excuses" to abandon diplomacy rather than pursuing a genuine resolution.
On Sunday (April 12), sources close to the Iranian delegation told Al Jazeera and Fars News Agency that the 21-hour marathon meeting was little more than a "theatrical display" designed to rehabilitate America's international image.
Allegations of Unfair Demands
The Iranian sources asserted that Washington sat at the negotiating table primarily to restore prestige lost during the recent 38-day military conflict.
According to Tehran, the U.S. continues to harbor "sky-high expectations" that do not reflect the current reality on the ground.
"Washington is pressuring Iran to concede to unfair demands at the negotiating table—achievements they failed to secure on the battlefield," a source close to the delegation stated.
No Immediate Plans for Further Talks
The report further indicates that Iran currently has no specific plans for a subsequent round of negotiations. Tehran maintains that the U.S. is creating a pretext to permanently close the door on diplomacy while blaming Iranian "inflexibility."
Key Points of Contention:
Sovereignty: Tehran insists it will not compromise on matters of national security or sovereign rights.
Diplomatic Sincerity: Iran views the U.S. approach as a face-saving maneuver rather than a sincere effort to end hostilities.
The "Red Line" Dispute: While U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance previously blamed the deadlock on Iran’s refusal to meet U.S. conditions, Tehran argues those conditions are illegal and excessive.
This diplomatic fallout threatens the fragile 15-day temporary ceasefire brokered by Pakistan. With the U.S. delegation already departing Islamabad and Iran digging in its heels, the prospect of a permanent peace remains increasingly remote.
