The United States and Iran have reached a peace agreement, bringing an end to their long-standing conflict.

US President Donald Trump and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the development on Sunday (June 14). Pakistan reportedly played the role of mediator in these negotiations.

Taking to his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump wrote that the agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran has now been finalized.

Meanwhile, Shehbaz Sharif stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that, under the agreement, military operations across all fronts, including Lebanon, will cease immediately and permanently.

The treaty is scheduled to be officially signed this coming Friday (June 19) in Switzerland.

Although the full terms of the agreement have not been disclosed, multiple sources indicated that it will entail the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the lifting of the US naval blockade on Iran, and the extension of the current ceasefire.

Decisions regarding Iran’s nuclear program will be made in separate talks within the next 60 days.

Trump announced that the Strait of Hormuz—critical for global energy supplies—will reopen without any tolls being imposed. Concurrently, the US naval blockade on Iranian ports will also be lifted.

The conflict, which escalated following US and Israeli strikes in February, has claimed thousands of lives in Iran and Lebanon. In retaliation, Iran targeted Israel and US military bases in the Gulf region. Furthermore, Iran’s effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz had caused global energy prices to surge.

However, Israel has stated that it is not a party to the US-Iran agreement. Even as the deal was being finalized, Israel carried out airstrikes targeting Hezbollah positions in southern Beirut on Sunday, sparking outrage from Iran.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry blamed the United States for the attack and warned of a fierce response. Nevertheless, Trump also criticized the strike, stating that such an attack should not have occurred when they were so close to a peace agreement.

According to the draft agreement, the US may release $25 billion worth of frozen Iranian assets.

In exchange, Iran will not seek to develop or acquire nuclear weapons and will refrain from enriching uranium and expanding its nuclear facilities until a final settlement is reached.

On the other hand, the US demands that the final agreement ensure the complete dismantling of Iran’s nuclear program and the destruction of its highly enriched uranium stockpiles. Iran, however, maintains that it should be allowed to dilute that uranium domestically.

Meanwhile, Qatari mediators have arrived in Tehran to finalize the agreement. However, resentment regarding the deal has emerged among Iran’s hardline factions, with anti-agreement slogans raised at rallies in various cities across the country.

According to analysts, if implemented, this agreement could ease ongoing tensions in the Middle East and have a positive impact on the global energy market.
