The West Bengal Legislative Assembly has expressed deep condolences over the passing of Bangladesh's former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. The state assembly has requested that a copy of the adopted condolence resolution be forwarded to her family, seeking the cooperation of the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata for this purpose.
On Tuesday (June 2), a letter signed by Soumendra Nath Das, the Chief Secretary of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, was dispatched to the Bangladesh Deputy High Commissioner in Kolkata.
The letter noted that the condolence motion regarding Khaleda Zia's demise was formally adopted during an assembly session on February 3 this year. A copy of the relevant section of that session's official proceedings was enclosed with the letter.
The communication requested that the copy containing the condolence resolution be delivered to Begum Khaleda Zia’s family.
According to the official proceedings, the Speaker recalled Khaleda Zia’s political life and contributions during the session. Following this, members of the assembly observed a one-minute silence to pay tribute to her memory.
Nearly four months later, on June 2, a formal request was made to the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission seeking diplomatic assistance to deliver the copy of the resolution.
The condolence motion described Khaleda Zia as a prominent political figure in Bangladesh and a three-time prime minister. It highlighted her long-standing leadership of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and her significant role in the movement to restore democracy.
Furthermore, the resolution emphasized her contributions to women's empowerment, economic development, and the advancement of Bangladesh-India relations. It characterized her as an influential leader in contemporary South Asian politics, expressing profound grief over her passing and extending heartfelt condolences to her family.
