Pakistan is experiencing a monsoon season with rainfall nearly 60% heavier than previous years, leading to widespread devastation. Since the start of the monsoon, at least 180 people have died and around 500 have been injured across the country.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported that unusually early and intense monsoon rains began in early July, resulting in a surge of fatalities from floods and related accidents.

On Saturday (July 19), the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a new forecast for rain, gusty winds, and thunderstorms. Heavy rainfall is anticipated in Sindh province over the next 24 hours, with the PMD warning that major cities like Karachi and Hyderabad could be severely affected.

The NDMA has advised residents in low-lying urban areas of Sindh to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities and to relocate from hazardous zones. Authorities also urged citizens to ensure proper drainage systems are maintained.

The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) stated that continuous rain is expected from July 20 to 25. During this period, most areas of the province could experience strong winds and heavy downpours, increasing the risk of riverine floods due to rising water levels.

Islamabad, the capital, and central Punjab are also forecast to receive heavy rainfall until July 24, with authorities warning of potential flooding in these regions.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the combination of melting glaciers and continuous rainfall has created a high risk of flash floods. Local administration has advised caution, especially when traveling in mountainous areas.

On Saturday alone, three children died in rain-related incidents in Punjab province: one drowned, another was killed by a roof collapse, and a third died from electrocution.

Punjab's emergency services department reported that since June 25, 1,594 individuals have been rescued from rain-related accidents, with 449 severely injured and hospitalized.
