Jahangir is former peon to the PM who amassed Tk 400cr

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's peon who who had amassed Tk 400 crore has been identified. His name is Jahangir Alam. Jahangir, hailing from Chatkhil of Noakhali, worked as a personal aide to the prime minister during her first two tenures from January 2009 to December 2018. The streets of Chatkhil and Sonaimuri area of Noakhali are still covered with his big billboards and posters.

Additionally, Jahangir was the Awami League president's personal aide when she stayed at the Sudha Sadan.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina revealed the matter at a press conference after her recent visit to China that the peon of her house has become the owner of Tk 400 crore on Sunday (July 14). Since then, speculation has started about the untold peon.

The Prime Minister said, 'A peon has worked in my house, he is now the owner of Tk 400 crore. He doesn't move without a helicopter! What can I say, it's real. When the truth revealed, I seized his card and fired him. That's what I've taken measures against him.'

Although Jahangir Alam was the peon of the Prime Minister, he introduced himself as the Prime Minister's personal special assistant. Using this identity, he regularly lobbied in the Secretariat. At the same time, he has extorted money from Awami League leaders at various levels. Using the same identity, he also secured the post of vice-president of Noakhali district Awami League. He also formed his own political block in Noakhali-1 parliamentary constituency.

Jahangir Alam was the Awami League nominee from Noakhali-1 constituency in the 12th national election. He did not get the party nomination and became an independent candidate. Jahangir Alam was accused of pressuring the followers of Awami League candidate HM Ibrahim through the administration using the identity of the Prime Minister's Office. Later, a special notification was issued from the Prime Minister's Press Wing on December 23.

Jahangir, a native of Noakhali’s Chatkhil Upazila, was the vice president of the Chatkhil Awami League. He collected the Awami League’s nomination form to contest the 12th general election.

He did not get the party nomination and became an independent candidate. Jahangir Alam was accused of pressuring the followers of HM Ibrahim,Awami League candidate through the administration using the identity of the Prime Minister's Office. Later, a special notification was issued from the Prime Minister's Press Wing on December 23.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's press wing said in a press release that Jahangir is doing immoral work by identifying himself as the personal assistant of the Prime Minister. Everyone is requested to be careful in this regard. If necessary, they are asked to seek help from law enforcement agencies. Many people expressed surprise at such a sudden warning about the once mighty Jahangir.

Bangladesh Bank has ordered to freez the bank accounts belonging to Jahangir Alam, former peon to PM Sheikh Hasina. He have also been asked to submit all information, including account opening forms, within the next five days.

On Sunday (July 14th), the central bank’s Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) sent instructions to all banks regarding this matter.
