At least 16 people have died and several others have been injured in lightning strikes across nine districts of Bangladesh.
The incidents occurred on Monday, April 28, resulting in four deaths each in Cumilla's Barura and Muradnagar, and Kishoreganj's Ashtagram, Mithamain, and Katiadi; two deaths in Netrokona's Kalmakanda and Madan; and one death each in Habiganj's Baniachang, Chandpur's Kachua, Moulvibazar's Barlekha, Shariatpur's Bhedarganj, Jashore's Sharsha, and Madaripur's Rajoir upazilas.
Cumilla:
In Cumilla, two students from Payalgach village in Barura's Khoshbas Union and two farmers from Muradnagar's Korbanpur village were killed by lightning. Three others were injured in the incident on Monday. The deceased have been identified as Fahad Hossain, son of the late Khokon Mia, and Mohammad Jihad, son of Bilal Hossain, both students of class six from Payalgach village; and Juel Bhuiyan, son of Jasim Uddin, and Nikhil Debnath, son of the late Bircharan Debnath, both farmers from Korbanpur village. The two students died while flying kites in the field. The two farmers were killed while harvesting paddy. It is reported that three others injured in the Korbanpur incident have lost their hearing.
Kishoreganj:
The deceased in Kishoreganj are identified as Indrajit Das, a farmer from Halalpur village in Ashtagram upazila; Swadhin Mia from Khayerpur village; Phulesha Begum, wife of the late Ashrab Ali from Raniganj village in Mithamain upazila; and Shahjahan, a fisherman from Dhonkipara village in Katiadi upazila.
On Monday, Indrajit died while harvesting paddy in the haor (wetland), Swadhin while fishing in the river, Phulesha while covering paddy straw, and Shahjahan while fishing.
Netrokona:
In Netrokona's Kalmakanda, the deceased Didarul Islam was a teacher at a local Qawmi madrasa. He died in a lightning strike on Sunday night in Dhanund village of Kharanoi Union. In another incident on Monday, Arafat, a student and son of Chalam Mia from Tiyashri village in Madan upazila, died in a lightning strike on his way to the madrasa.
Moulvibazar:
In Moulvibazar's Barlekha, a tea garden worker named Makhan Robi Das died in a lightning strike while harvesting paddy. The incident occurred on Monday in Sridharpur village of Uttar Shahbazpur Union. Makhan was the son of the late Shankura Robi Das from Ohidabad tea garden in that union.
Habiganj:
In Habiganj's Baniachang, a farmer named Durbasa Das, son of Kalabasi Das from Ariyamugur village, died while harvesting paddy. He was killed by lightning in his village on Monday. His brother Bhushan Das and sister Sudhanya Das were also injured in the incident. Additionally, Bayezid Mia, a child of Nurul Islam from Baghhata village in the same upazila, was injured by lightning.
Chandpur:
In Chandpur's Kachua, Bishkha Rani Sarkar died in a lightning strike while going to fetch paddy. She was the wife of Haripada Sarkar from Nahara village. The tragic incident took place on Monday.
Shariatpur:
In Shariatpur's Bhedarganj, Shefali Begum, wife of Sohrab Bepari from Beparikandi village, died in a lightning strike while fetching grass for cows in the field. The incident occurred in Beparikandi village on Monday.
Jashore:
In Jashore's Benapole, Amir Hossain, a farmer from Beri Narayanpur village, died in a lightning strike while stacking paddy. The incident took place in the village on Monday.
Madaripur:
In Madaripur's Rajoir upazila, Kajol Barai, a farmer from Tekherhat village, died in a lightning strike while returning home after cutting paddy. The incident occurred in Kamalapur village on Monday.
