British Prime Minister Keir Starmer congratulated his favourite football club, Arsenal FC after the London side clinched the English Premier League title, successfully bringing a 22-year drought to an end.
“22 long years for Arsenal. But finally, we’re back where we belong. Champions!” Starmer wrote on the social media platform X shortly after the historic title victory was confirmed late Tuesday.
The sporting triumph offered a welcome personal boost for Starmer, who has been facing mounting political pressure following a string of poor results for the Labour Party in local and regional elections earlier this month.
Several Labour lawmakers have openly called on him to step down, one cabinet minister has resigned, and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is currently seeking a seat in Parliament to challenge Starmer for the party leadership.
On the pitch, Arsenal narrowly edged past defending champions Manchester City FC to secure the biggest prize in English football.
Following the confirmation of their victory, Arsenal players celebrated deep into the night. Midfielder Eberechi Eze shared photos of the festivities on Instagram until around 5 am local time.
One notable image featured Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard holding an Arsenal-branded bottle in his mouth.
The gesture appeared to be a direct response to critics who had previously labelled the squad "bottlers"—a British slang term used for teams that collapse under intense pressure.
Prior to this historic win, Arsenal had finished as runners-up in the Premier League for three consecutive seasons and had not captured a major trophy since 2020.
Captain Odegaard is expected to officially lift the Premier League trophy after Arsenal’s final match of the season against Crystal Palace FC this coming Sunday.
Meanwhile, celebratory videos circulating on social media showed several key players, including Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, and Jurrien Timber, still walking around the club’s Emirates Stadium as dawn broke on Wednesday morning.
