In a major cricketing upset, Italy secured an incredible victory over Ireland in Dubai on Sunday night (January 25). This marks Italy’s first-ever T20 International win against a Full Member nation of the ICC.
Italy defeated Ireland by 4 wickets in the third and final match of the series. While Ireland won the overall series, the rising European side ended the tour on a high note with a dramatic finish. This was also Italy's first-ever bilateral T20 series against a Full Member.
A Thrilling Run Chase
After being sent in to bat, Ireland was bowled out for 154 in 19.4 overs. Italy chased down the target with three balls to spare, but the road to victory was far from easy.
- The Equation: Italy required 30 runs from the final two overs. The situation became even more tense when the equation stood at 20 runs needed off just 7 balls.
- The Heroics: Marcus Campopiano struck a crucial boundary off the final ball of the 19th over.
- The Finisher: Grant Stewart then took center stage in the final over, smashing three consecutive sixes off the first three balls to seal the win. Stewart remained unbeaten on 33 off just 19 deliveries, including four sixes and a boundary.
World Cup Momentum
This series served as vital preparation for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Having successfully navigated the qualifiers, Italy has secured a spot in the main tournament for the first time.
