The escalating conflict in the Middle East has spilled over into the world of sports, leaving the West Indies cricket team stranded in Kolkata following the conclusion of their T20 World Cup campaign.
The Caribbean squad, including stars like Shimron Hetmyer and Shai Hope, is unable to return home as regional tensions have severely disrupted international flight paths.
The Zimbabwe national team has also reportedly been grounded in India under similar circumstances.
Geopolitical Tensions Ground Flights
The travel chaos follows a joint US-Israeli operation that resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei. In the wake of subsequent retaliatory strikes by Iran, airspace across West Asia has been strictly limited.
Notably, Dubai International Airport—a major global transit hub—has been completely shut down. The closure of these vital corridors has created a logistical nightmare for athletes and officials connected to the World Cup.
Teams in Limbo
West Indies: Despite being knocked out of the tournament following a defeat against India, the team remains stuck in Kolkata, unable to secure a departure route.
Zimbabwe: After playing their final Super Eight match against South Africa, the Zimbabwean squad was scheduled to return home. They are currently being held in Delhi under special arrangements.
Travel Disruptions
According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, the Zimbabwe contingent was scheduled to depart in several groups. One group was set to leave at 4:30 AM on Monday (March 2), but their Emirates flight was canceled because it required a transit through Dubai.
With regional stability uncertain, cricket boards and tournament organizers are looking for alternative routes to ensure the safe return of the players.
