The escalating military tensions in the Middle East have spilled over into the world of international sports, leading to the indefinite postponement of the white-ball series between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.

The series, which was scheduled to take place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from March 13 to March 25, has been suspended due to heightened security risks and regional flight disruptions.

Series at a Glance
The tour was set to be a significant milestone, marking the first time Afghanistan would host Sri Lanka for a bilateral series.

  • T20Is: March 13, 15, and 17 (Sharjah)
  • ODIs: March 20, 22, and 25 (Dubai)
  • Current Status: Postponed indefinitely.

Security and Logistics Concerns
While neither the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) nor Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has issued an official public statement, sources confirm that both boards agreed the UAE is currently unviable as a host.

Airspace Disruptions: Recent missile exchanges and airstrikes have led to widespread airspace closures across West Asia.

Stranded Teams: The impact of these disruptions was recently highlighted by the West Indies and South Africa squads being temporarily stranded in Kolkata after their exit from the T20 World Cup, as transit routes through Dubai were compromised.

Venue Challenges: While shifting the series to a neutral venue like India or Sri Lanka was discussed, logistical hurdles and tight scheduling made a quick relocation impossible.

A New Era on Hold
The postponement is particularly disappointing for Afghanistan, as it was supposed to mark the beginning of Ibrahim Zadran’s tenure as T20I captain. The opening batter was recently appointed to lead the side after veteran spinner Rashid Khan was sacked following the team’s group-stage exit from the 2026 T20 World Cup.

The regional crisis has already impacted other fixtures, including the Cricket World Cup League 2 tri-series in Nepal involving the UAE and Oman, which was also pushed back last week.
