For the past 13 years, Mumbai Indians have faced a recurring "curse" of losing their opening match of the IPL season. However, the 2026 edition saw the powerhouse franchise finally break that streak.
On Sunday (March 29), one of the league's most successful teams kicked off their campaign with a commanding win over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
The high-scoring nature of this year's tournament continued to put bowlers on high alert. In just the second match of the season, fans witnessed a massive "run-fest" as both teams combined for a staggering total of 444 runs.
Ultimately, Mumbai Indians chased down the target with 5 balls to spare, securing a 6-wicket victory.
After losing the toss at the Wankhede Stadium, Kolkata was sent in to bat. Openers Ajinkya Rahane and Finn Allen set an aggressive tone from the start.
Allen contributed a quick-fire 37 off 17 balls, while Rahane played a stellar knock of 67 runs from 40 deliveries.
In the middle order, Angkrish Raghuvanshi added a rapid 51 off 29 balls, followed by an unbeaten 33 off 21 balls from Rinku Singh. KKR finished their 20 overs at 220 for 4. Shardul Thakur was the pick of the bowlers for Mumbai, claiming 3 wickets.
Facing a daunting target, Mumbai’s openers Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton took control immediately. Their massive 148-run partnership proved to be the turning point of the match.
Rohit departed after a blistering 78 off 38 balls, featuring 6 fours and 6 sixes. Meanwhile, Rickelton played a whirlwind innings of 81 runs off 43 balls, smashing 8 sixes.
In the closing stages, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Hardic Pandya contributed vital cameos to guide the team home. Mumbai reached the target in 19.1 overs with 4 wickets down, sealing a historic and emphatic win.
