BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, Acting Chairman of BNP Tarique Rahman deposited his Bangladeshi passport in the UK Home Office for getting political asylum according to the British law. Government is spreading political propaganda regarding his citizenship. The documents of 13 errors submitted by State Minister Shahriar Alam is ‘mysterious’.
He said these at a press conference organized at the party central office at Nayapaltan in the capital on Tuesday.
He said, the only achievement of Prime Minister’s London visit consisting with huge number of entourage by expensing people’s money, is three pages of Tarique Rahman’s passport collected by State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam and photocopy of a mysterious one lined letter of UK Home Office which is full with uncountable errors.
The BNP Secretary General said, at the beginning of the document the name of the department was written wrong. It was written ‘Bangladesh embassy’. It should be ‘High commission of Bangladesh’. There telephone and fax number were mentioned which is uncommon. It is not usually mentioned in the British letters. It was written ‘Dear Sirs’ instead of ‘Dear Sir’. There was no name of the signatory. Considering the matters there is much mystery over the letter.
Fakhrul said, the propaganda of Tarique Rahman’s citizenship giving up is nothing but idiotism. In this regard the statement of State Minister is illegal and illogical.
Indicating Shahriar Alam he said, the person who does not know in which ground a by-born citizen can lose his citizenship, can only hold the post of a minister in this type of unelected government.
He said, Tarique Rahman sought interim political asylum in the UK and he obtained it. According to the law of that country he was given travel permit through depositing his passport. He will get the passport if he wants to return to the country. He will be able to do that. So what the State Minister said was not true.
The BNP leader said, Tarique Rahman is a by-born Bangladeshi citizen. It is also mentioned in the constitution that by-born citizenship cannot be cancelled if any major problem does not occur. Basically when we do movement on the demand of impartial government and attaining democratic rights then Awami League try to divert people’s attention.
Fakhrul said, Tarique Rahman sought political asylum for temporary period like many well accepted politicians and eminent personalities of the world and he got it.
