Bangladesh important partner of UN: Guterres tells Hasan

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has termed Bangladesh as an important partner of the United Nations to various UN initiatives. He made the remarks during a meeting with visiting Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud at the UN Headquarters in New York on Thursday (May 30) afternoon local time.

Guterres said Bangladesh has been making significant contributions to various UN initiatives, including peacekeeping, sustainable development, climate change and many other activities of the UN and as such we consider Bangladesh as an important partner of the UN.

During the meeting, the UN secretary general expressed deep gratitude for Bangladesh's generosity to the Rohingyas. He expressed concern over the current situation in Rakhine State of Myanmar.

The secretary general praised Bangladesh's capacity to adapt to and manage the adversities of climate change.

Hasan expressed gratitude to the secretary general for his leadership in dealing with the ongoing global challenges, including the conflict in Gaza in Palestine. He said the peace-loving people around the world appreciated the manner in which the UN Secretary General personally attended Rafah to avoid conflict.

The Foreign Minister urged the UN to maintain the world's focus on the Rohingya crisis, ensure safe and sustainable return of nearly 1.3 million Rohingyas who have taken shelter in Bangladesh after being displaced from Myanmar and continue to play a strong role in improving the conflict situation in Rakhine.
