Benazir hasn't appeared at ACC even after given additional time

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed did not appear before the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). He did not go to the ACC head office at Segunbagicha until 11:20 am. ACC gave 16 days extra time on Benazir's request.

He was ordered to appear before the ACC inquiry committee for questioning for the second time on Sunday (June 23) at 10 am.

Benazir has been charged with acquiring illegal wealth. At the same time, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) was probing his family's assets. Meanwhile, he left the country with his family on May 4.

According to the ACC, Benazir will not be given more time if he does not appear on Sunday. Earlier on May 28, a notice was sent to Benazir and his wife and children for questioning. Benazir was asked to appear before the court on June 6 and his wife and children on June 9. However, Benazir wants another 15 days to appear before the ACC through a lawyer.

Benazir Ahmed was IGP from April 2020 to September 2022 and Director General of RAB from January 2015 to April 2020. He also served as Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

ACC continues to probe the assets of Benazir's family. The court ordered the confiscation of the assets found so far.

Recently, the ACC reported eight more flats in Dhaka in the name of Benazir and his family members. Six of these flats are in a building in Adabar, Dhaka. Two in Badda, located in a 14-storey building named Rupayaan Limited Square.

A total of 12 flats in Dhaka have been found in the name of Benazir's family. Earlier, four flats were found in Gulshan.

In response to ACC's application, Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Mohammad Assam Jaglul Hossain recently ordered the seizure of eight flats belonging to Benazir's family. Besides, the court ordered the seizure of about 76 bigha (25 acres) of Benazir's family and freezing of shares in private Citizen Television and Tiger Craft Apparels Limited.

Earlier, the court ordered the seizure of 621 bigha land, 19 company shares and 4 flats in Gulshan in the name of Benazir and his family in Gopalganj, Madaripur, Cox's Bazar and Savar in Dhaka.
