Order to take legal action against Benazir

The High Court directed the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to take legal action against former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed and his wife and children.

Monday (July 29) High Court Judge Md. Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Kazi Ebadat Hossain passed the order.

The ACC issued a progress report on July 28, stating that it had obtained information on large amounts of illegal assets of Benazir and his wife and children and evidence of their unusual transactions in several banks. The High Court accepted the report and gave this order. At the same time, the court fixed November 5 as the date for filing and hearing the progress report in this regard.

Senior lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan presented the ACC report to the court. Lawyer Barrister M Sarwar Hossain heard on behalf of the petitioner. Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik was for the state. There was no lawyer for Benazir Ahmed.

ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan and state lawyer Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik said the High Court asked the ACC to submit a progress report on the investigation of the complaint against Benazir Ahmed. That report has been filed.

The court accepted the report and asked the ACC to continue the investigation. The next date of hearing has been set for November 5.

In the meantime, the court asked to report the progress again. ACC has been asked to take appropriate legal action against them if the allegations are proved.

According to Section 17(c) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, the Commission can initiate an inquiry on its own initiative into any complaint.
