Chairman of UGC steps down

University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman, the supervisory body of the country's higher education institutions, Professor Kazi Shahidullah has resigned from his post.

He submitted his resignation to the Education Ministry on Sunday (August 11). In the resignation letter, he mentioned his physical illness. Although he has not been in the country for more than a year. He is the brother of Awami League presidium member Kazi Zafarullah.

Professor Kazi Shahidullah mentioned in the resignation letter, I joined the University Grants Commission on May 28, 2023, as per the notification of Education Ministry. I have been staying in Australia for medical treatment since August 20 last year due to physical illness.

He also wrote, 'In view of the Australian doctor advice and present physical condition, I express my incapacity to carry out the duties of chairmanship of UGC.

Professor Kazi Shahidullah started his teaching career as a history lecturer in Dhaka University in February 1976. He became a university professor in February 1991. He was the head of the DU history department from 2002 to 2005.

He served as the Dean of Arts Faculty for three consecutive terms From 1997 to 2003. He was elected to Dhaka University Senate. He won syndicate elections for ten consecutive years.

Kazi Shahidullah previously served as Vice-Chancellor of National University. He was appointed as UGC Chairman on October 4, 2019.
