ICSF urges UN to investigate all incidents of violence
The International Crimes Strategy Forum (ICSF) called on the United Nations to investigate all incidents of violence in Bangladesh, from the anti-discrimination student movement to the movement to topple the government.
The London-based organization for international crime prevention and justice sent an open letter to UN human rights chief Falker Turk on Saturday (August 17) outlining some concerns and suggestions.
In addition to the killing of students, attacks and killings on ordinary citizens, law and order forces, retaliatory attacks and killings on former prime minister's party workers, attacks on religious minorities, attacks on cultural and heritage, attacks on freedom of expression, media and judicial freedom, specified in the letter. It has been suggested to look into matters such as attacks on leaders of political ideologies.
It said that ICSF welcomed the decision to send United Nations technical team to investigate the killings in the anti-discrimination student movement of Bangladesh.
Highlighting the statement of Asif Nazrul, Law Adviser to the Interim Government, the letter revealed, 'The UN Committee of Inquiry will investigate the incident only until August 5, all incidents should be investigated later.'
The letter also said that to make investigation effective and credible, there should be no haste and the evidence should be examined over time. Apart from this, several suggestions have been given in this letter including careful conduct of investigations.
In this, it has been asked to take into consideration the investigation and accountability initiatives taken by the previous government for the investigation, and it has been asked to take into account the police departmental investigation, judicial investigation and the activities of the National Commission of Inquiry done by prominent citizens in the case of Abu Sayed's death in Rangpur on July 16.
