Denmark Pledges Support for Uprising Victims and Green Investments in Bangladesh
On 21 September, the Danish Ambassador to Bangladesh, Mr. Christian Brix Møller, paid a courtesy call on Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus. He congratulated Yunus on leading the interim government during this crucial period for the country and presented a congratulatory letter from Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
During the meeting, the Ambassador expressed condolences for the victims of the July-August uprising and offered Danish support for the rehabilitation of survivors, particularly those affected by torture. He highlighted Denmark’s commitment to key areas of the interim government’s reform agenda, including institutional reform in collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission, universities, think tanks, and the law ministry. Denmark pledged to support good governance and state capacity building, allocating $1 million to the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) to strengthen economic governance and help Bangladesh overcome the middle-income trap.
The Ambassador also emphasized Denmark’s interest in enhancing trade and investment ties with Bangladesh. Key investment projects include a $400+ million investment in the Laldia Container Terminal by Maersk/APM Terminals, a $1.3 billion offshore wind energy project by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, and $300 million financing for the Saidabad Water Treatment Plant in Dhaka.
Additionally, the Ambassador reiterated Denmark’s ongoing commitment to the Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company (KAFCO) through a public-private partnership and expressed interest in new business opportunities, such as technology transfer in the pharmaceutical sector.
Highlighting the strengthening relationship between Denmark and Bangladesh, the Ambassador affirmed shared commitments to advancing green transitions in energy, shipping, and agriculture, along with labor market reforms. He also discussed closer cooperation on international solutions to the Rohingya crisis, noting Denmark’s upcoming membership in the UN Security Council (2025-2026) and the ILO Governing Body (2024-2027).
The meeting underscored Denmark's continued support for Bangladesh’s reform and development goals.
