Egg, Vegetable Prices Soar
The government fixed the price of chicken and eggs on September 15. But that is not reflected in the market. Eggs are being sold at Tk170 to Tk180 per dozen and broiler chicken at Tk190 to Tk200 per kg depending on the area. Besides, the price of golden chicken also increased from Tk10 to Tk270 to 280. The lower class and lower middle class are in extreme trouble. The same is the case for vegetables. Prices increased more than last week.
Such a picture was seen in the capital's several markets including Karwan Bazar, Newmarket, and Hatirpool on Friday (October 4).
Markets are full of vegetables. The shopkeepers are sitting and arranging the stalls of brinjal, cucumber, pointed gourd, String beans, Arum lobe, Lady's finger, Spiny gourd, papaya, bitter gourd, beans, carrot, radish, cauliflower and cabbage. But none of the prices are affordable.
Eggplants are being sold at Tk100 to 140 per kg, bitter gourd at Tk70 to 80, gourd at Tk50 to 60, radish at Tk50, string beans at Tk50, arum lobe at Tk60 to 80, sponge gourd at Tk80 and pointed gourd at Tk60 to 70. Apart from this, papaya Tk30, Spiny gourd Tk80, carrot Tk120, taro stem root Tk80 to 90, tomato Tk160, beans Tk220-260 and cucumber Tk60 to 80 per kg.
Besides, snake gourd per kg at Tk60, cauliflower Tk60 to 70 per piece, potato Tk55 to 60, and per piece gourd at Tk70 to 80 per kg.
However, traders claim that the crop fields have been destroyed recently due to floods and heavy rains. Due to the low supply in the market, the price of vegetables has increased.
Onion prices in the country have come down slightly after India eased conditions on onion exports and reduced tariffs. Onions that used to be sold at Tk 120 per kg are now being sold at Tk110 to 115.
Consumers are disappointed with such prices of daily commodities in the market. They say the government has changed, but the market syndicate remains the same. There is no escape from this situation!
