Former President Badruddoza Chowdhury Passes Away at 94

Former President, Professor Dr. A.Q.M. Badruddoza Chowdhury has died (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilayhi Raji'un). He was 94 years old.

He passed away at 3:15 AM on Friday (October 5) while undergoing treatment at the Uttara Women’s Medical College Hospital, which he founded. His Press Secretary, Jahangir Alam, confirmed the news.

Badruddoza Chowdhury is survived by his wife, one son, two daughters, grandchildren, and many admirers.

He was admitted to the hospital on October 2 due to a lung infection. On the same day, his daughter, Dr. Shaila Chowdhury, mentioned that her father had been suffering from ischemic heart disease for a long time.

On Thursday night (October 4), his son, Mahi B. Chowdhury, informed that his father had been put on life support. He also requested prayers from the nation for his father.

Renowned physician and veteran politician Badruddoza Chowdhury was born on October 11, 1930, in the famous "Munsef Bari" in Cumilla town, at his maternal grandparents' house. His father, Advocate Kafil Uddin Chowdhury, was the Vice President of the Krishak Praja Party, the General Secretary of the United Front, and a member of the provincial cabinet of then East Pakistan.

B. Chowdhury began his political career in 1978 at the request of the late President Major General Ziaur Rahman. He was elected as a Member of Parliament from Srinagar, Munshiganj in 1979 and served as a Cabinet Minister. In 1991, he was re-elected as a Member of Parliament and first served as Education Minister and later as Deputy Leader of Parliament. In 1996, he served as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in Parliament. In 2001, he was once again elected as a Member of Parliament and served as Foreign Minister in the BNP government from October to November of that year.

On November 14, 2001, Badruddoza Chowdhury was elected as the President of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. He resigned from the presidency on June 21, 2002, due to political reasons.

On May 8, 2004, Badruddoza Chowdhury founded the political party "Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh." He was serving as the party's President until his death.

His wife's name is Hasina Warda Chowdhury. Professor Chowdhury was the father of two daughters and one son. His elder daughter, Muna, is a barrister by profession. His younger daughter, Shaila Chowdhury, is a doctor and a professor at Uttara Women's Medical College in Dhaka. His only son, Mahi B. Chowdhury, is a politician.
