Bank Accounts of Bashundhara Chairman, MD, and Family Frozen
Bank accounts of 8 individuals, including the Chairman and Managing Director of Bashundhara Group, have been frozen.
An order has been issued to freeze the bank accounts of Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, Chairman of one of the country’s top industrial groups, Bashundhara, and Managing Director (MD) Sayem Sobhan Anvir, along with eight members of their family.
On Sunday, October 6, Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), the country's central financial intelligence agency, sent a letter to all banks and financial institutions regarding this matter.
Others included in the list are Ahmed Akbar Sobhan’s sons Sadat Sobhan, Safiat Sobhan, and Safwan Sobhan, as well as their three daughters-in-law Sonia Ferdousi Sobhan, Sabrina Sobhan, and Yasha Sobhan.
The letter stated that if any bank accounts are operated in the name of these individuals or their companies, transactions in those accounts are to be suspended for 30 days under the Money Laundering Prevention Act. Additionally, if they hold any lockers, their use is also to be suspended for 30 days.
Besides the suspension of transactions, the letter provided the names and national identification details of Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, his sons, and their daughters-in-law. Banks and financial institutions have been asked to send account-related information or documents (account opening forms, KYC, and transaction details), current loan information (customer name, loan account number, and present status, classification details, etc.), unexpected import or export bill details, and locker-related information to BFIU within two working days.
