The number of Royal Bengal Tigers in Sundarbans mangrove forest, a part of Bangladesh has continued to increase at a slow but consistent rate.

In this year's survey, 11 tigers have increased in Sundarbans. Through this, the number of tigers has reached 125.

Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan revealed this information at a press conference organized on the occasion of announcing the results of the 'Sundarbans Tiger Survey-2024' at the Secretariat on Tuesday (October 8).

She said that after the overall judgment analysis, the tiger survey conducted in Sundarbans in 2023-2024, 125 tigers were recorded in the Sundarbans with a tiger density of 2.64 per 100 square kilometers of forest.

Rizwana also said that the first tiger survey was conducted in 2015 through modern camera trapping methods and the number of tigers was found to be 106 in 2015 and the density of tigers per 100 square kilometers was 2.17. Later in 2018, 114 tigers were found in the Sundarbans tiger survey through the second phase of camera trapping and the density of tigers per 100 square kilometers was 2.55. That is, compared to 2015, 8 tigers increased in 2018 and the percentage of tiger increase was about 8 percent.

The Bangladesh government has implemented various conservation measures, including the Tiger Action Plan and the National Tiger Recovery Programme, to address challenges.

Survey History
Previous surveys have shown that the Royal Bengal Tiger in the Bangladeshi portion of the Sundarbans has fluctuated over time.

In 1975, a field survey conducted by Bubert Hendrichs found 350 Bengal tigers.

In 1982, Margaret Salter carried out a sample and field survey and estimated that the number of tigers was 425.

Rex Gittins surveyed in 1984 covering 110 sq km of the Sundarbans South Wildlife Sanctuary and found the tiger population to be 430 to 450.

In 1992, the forest department collected data from the people working in the Sundarbans area and estimated the number to be 359.

The following year, Dhan Bahadur Tamang conducted a census based on pugmark (tiger footprints) covering 350 sq km of the Sundarbans area and put the number at 362.

In 2004, a pugmark census conducted said the number of tigers was 440.
