Bangladeshi Killed by Myanmar Navy Gunfire, Dhaka Issues Strong Protest
Bangladesh lodged a formal protest with the Myanmar government on Friday (October 11) after a Bangladeshi fisherman, Md. Osman (60), was killed by gunfire from the Myanmar Navy.
The incident occurred on Wednesday (October 9) when gunfire was directed from the Myanmar coast at a Bangladeshi fishing trawler in the Bay of Bengal, near Moulvir Shil, southwest of Saint Martin's Island. One fisherman was killed, and three others were injured. During the attack, four trawlers with 60 crew members were abducted and taken to Myanmar by the navy, though the trawlers and the other crew members were later released.
The deceased, Md. Osman, was the son of Bachu Mia from Konarpara in Shah Porir Dwip. He was a fisherman on a trawler owned by Saiful Company in the Bazarpara area of Shah Porir Dwip.
In response to this tragic event, Bangladesh expressed deep concern in a diplomatic note sent to the Myanmar embassy in Dhaka.
The Bangladesh government urged Myanmar to take immediate action to prevent such unwarranted incidents from happening again. Dhaka also reminded Myanmar to fully respect Bangladesh's maritime sovereignty and refrain from any further provocative actions.
