President Mohammed Shahabuddin has emphasized that a safe and efficient road transport system is a vital element of a welfare state. He also called for the strict enforcement of existing laws to ensure accident-free roads.

In a message on Tuesday (October 22) marking National Safe Roads Day 2024, the president expressed his satisfaction over the observance of the day, aimed at raising public awareness and enhancing safety on the country’s roads and highways.

He noted that with the expansion of the transport system, the number of vehicles and road accidents has been rising. To ensure road safety, infrastructure development must go hand in hand with law enforcement, and efforts should be made to encourage compliance with traffic regulations.

The president stressed the devastating impact of road accidents, which cause physical, mental, financial, and social harm, often leading to severe crises for families. He highlighted the need for initiatives such as constructing road dividers, straightening dangerous curves, building flyovers, underpasses, overpasses, and installing or reinstating traffic signs and signals. Regular training for drivers and other stakeholders is also essential.

He praised the involvement of students in traffic management and congestion control in various parts of the country, adding that the active and well-trained participation of students and youth in road safety efforts could significantly reduce accidents, disorder, and irregularities.

The president expressed hope that alongside the government’s measures, vehicle owners, drivers, passengers, and pedestrians would comply with relevant laws and regulations. He also appreciated this year’s theme for National Safe Roads Day—“Commitment of Students and Citizens: Safe Roads for All”—as highly relevant.

Finally, he underscored the importance of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by halving road accident fatalities by 2030. For this, Bangladesh must adopt suitable plans, build modern transport infrastructure, ensure smooth mobility, use safe vehicles, and enhance public awareness.

The president concluded by wishing success for all initiatives undertaken for National Safe Roads Day 2024.
