Bangladesh Plans Elections Based on National Consensus After Reforms
Necessary reforms will be completed, and arrangements for elections based on national consensus will be made, stated the Advisor for Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, Mr. Md. Nahid Islam.
He shared this information on Monday (November 4) during a meeting with Norwegian Ambassador Hakon Harald Gulbrandsen at the Information and Communication Technology Division’s office.
The Information Advisor said, "We have gained a new Bangladesh through a mass uprising led by students and the people. Over the past sixteen years, the fascist government has committed numerous irregularities and acts of corruption. The interim government has initiated the process of rebuilding the country so that the nation and its people can recover from the harm."
He added that the government seeks to strengthen ties with Norway as a development partner and hopes for investment in the development of information technology and media.
When asked by the Ambassador about the cyber security law, the Advisor stated that the law would be repealed within a week, along with all cases filed under it. He assured that all laws obstructing freedom of expression are under review, and decisions regarding reforms will be made in consultation with stakeholders.
When the Ambassador inquired about minority oppression, Nahid Islam replied that minorities in Bangladesh are safe. Special security arrangements were made for them during the recent Puja, and holidays were extended.
He mentioned that the previous fascist government exploited minorities as a political tool, treating them as a vote bank. Despite major incidents of minority oppression during their rule, they did not seek justice.
Nahid Islam sought Norway’s cooperation in disseminating the true story about the July uprising, countering various negative propaganda abroad. He also sought Norway’s advice and assistance in rebuilding the country.
At this time, Ambassador Hakon Harald Gulbrandsen expressed Norway’s readiness to stand by the interim government and assist in rebuilding the new Bangladesh.
