Government Takes Strong Action Over Harassment of Asif Nazrul in Geneva
While attending the International Labour Organization (ILO) Governing Body meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, Professor Asif Nazrul, the interim government's advisor on law, justice, and parliamentary affairs, faced harassment at the airport. Following this incident, Bangladesh Mission's Labor Counselor in Geneva, Muhammad Kamrul Islam, has been "stand released" and instructed to return to Dhaka as soon as possible.
A source from the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment confirmed this information on Wednesday night (November 14).
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it has been decided to dismiss Mizan, a former employee of the Ministry of Commerce, who was hired locally at the Geneva Mission during the Awami League's tenure. Nearly all individuals involved, including the three masterminds of the incident, have been identified, and legal proceedings are underway against them.
The source added that the government considers the incident involving Asif Nazrul in Geneva to be premeditated. Despite protocol arrangements, the government has questioned why such an incident occurred and who might have been involved. The Ministry has formally requested an explanation from the Bangladesh Embassy and Permanent Mission in Geneva via diplomatic correspondence.
Following the Geneva incident, an urgent circular has been sent to all of Bangladesh's foreign missions.
The circular emphasizes two points:
- Ensuring proper protocol and security for high-profile government officials during foreign visits.
- Urging ambassadors and all mission staff to remain vigilant to avoid any undesirable situations.
