37 Senior Journalists Suspended from National Press Club Membership

Membership of the National Press Club has been suspended for 37 senior journalists for acting as henchmen of the deposed dictatorship.

This decision was communicated through a notice signed by the Press Club’s President, Hasan Hafiz, and General Secretary, Ayub Bhuiyan, on Monday, November 18. The decision was taken during a meeting of the club’s executive committee held on October 27.

The suspended journalists include: Nurul Amin Prabhash, Zayedul Ahsan Pintu, Mozammel Babu, Ashish Saikat, Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, Sohel Haider Chowdhury, Farzana Rupa, Ashok Chowdhury, Azmal Haque Helal, Abul Khair, Md. Manjurul Islam, Pranab Saha, Noim Nizam, Khairul Alam, Abed Khan, Subash Chandra Bhadra, Zahirul Islam Mamun (J.E. Mamun), Zafar Wazed, Saiful Islam Kallol, Pavel Rahman, Azizul Islam Bhuiyan, Shaban Mahmud, Muhammad Shafiqur Rahman, Abul Kalam Azad, Shyamal Sarker, Ajay Das Gupta, Alamgir Hossain, Ramaprasad Sarker Babu, Sanjay Saha Pial, Faraji Azmal Hossain, Anisur Rahman, Enamul Haque Chowdhury, Naimul Islam Khan, Md. Ashraf Ali, Molla Jalal, Ikhtiar Uddin, and Abu Jafar Surjo.

Meanwhile, since the interim government took office, the Department of Information (PID) has revoked the accreditation cards of 167 journalists in three phases.

Speaking during a post-COP-29 press briefing on Monday evening, Azad Majumder, the Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Advisor, stated that journalists who feel unjustly treated by the revocation of their accreditation cards could appeal for review, which would be addressed after proper verification.

On November 7, PID revoked the accreditation cards of 118 journalists. Earlier, on October 29, it canceled the cards of 20 journalists, followed by another 29 on November 3.
