Dhaka Condemns Desecration of National Flag in Kolkata Protest
A violent protest occurred outside the Deputy High Commission of Bangladesh in Kolkata, West Bengal. During the demonstration, protesters burned an effigy of the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government and set fire to the national flag of Bangladesh. Dhaka has strongly condemned the incident.
On Friday, November 29, Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement condemning the act.
The statement noted, “The Government of Bangladesh expresses deep concern over the violent protest organized by a Hindu group named Bangiya Hindu Jagaran outside the Deputy High Commission in Kolkata on Thursday, November 28. Protesters breached police barricades, reached the High Commission's premises, burned the national flag of Bangladesh, and set fire to an effigy of the Chief Adviser. While the situation appears to be under control, a sense of insecurity prevails among all members of the Deputy High Commission.”
The Government of Bangladesh strongly denounced the desecration of the national flag and the burning of the Chief Adviser’s effigy, describing these acts as reprehensible. The statement urged the Government of India to take necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future.
Furthermore, it emphasized that Bangladesh condemns any form of violent activity and called on the Indian government to ensure the security of the Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, as well as other Bangladeshi diplomatic missions and their personnel, both diplomatic and non-diplomatic, across India.
