SC Stays HC Verdict Declaring August 15 as National Mourning Day
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has stayed the High Court's verdict declaring August 15 as a National Mourning Day.
A six-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, passed the order after hearing an appeal submitted challenging the HC order, said additional attorney general Barrister Anik R Haque.
Anik R Haque informed the matter to the media on Monday (December 2).
He said that the stay order was given on Sunday (December 1) by allowing the state to appeal against the High Court's verdict.
Earlier, in 2009, the High Court declared August 15 as a national mourning day. Which had been observed till now. However, after Sheikh Hasina's resignation and departure from the country on August 5, the interim government formed under the leadership of Dr Muhammad Yunus canceled this holiday and issued a notification.
Incidentally, the Awami League government had been observing August 15 as a 'National Mourning Day', the day Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was killed along with his family. The day was a government holiday. It was being celebrated as an 'A' category national day.
