Bangladesh High Commission Attack in Agartala
7 Arrested, 3 Police Officers Suspended
Indian authorities have dismissed three police officers in connection with an attack, vandalism, and burning of the national flag at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala. Additionally, seven people have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the attack.
The dismissed officers are sub-inspectors, and a deputy superintendent of police has been removed from their duties and sent to the police headquarters.
Kiran Kumar, the Superintendent of Police for West Tripura, confirmed the information on Tuesday (December 3). He mentioned that three sub-inspectors had been dismissed following the incident that occurred the previous day (Monday).
The police have filed a case at the New Capital Complex Police Station in Agartala, and an investigation has begun, with legal actions to follow.
On Monday afternoon, supporters of an organization called the Hindu Sangharsha Samiti carried out an attack on the premises of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has described the incident as "unfortunate."
The police official added that semi-paramilitary forces had been deployed for the security of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission.
The Bangladesh government has expressed strong condemnation of the attack on the Assistant High Commission in Agartala. A statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that various events indicate that the attack was premeditated, with the attackers allowed to break the main gate of the mission and engage in aggressive activities on the premises.
It was reported that in the presence of local law enforcement officials, the attackers damaged the flagpole, desecrated the Bangladesh national flag, and caused property damage inside the Assistant High Commission. The statement also noted that local police, responsible for securing the premises, had failed to take active steps to control the situation from the outset.
The statement further mentioned that a similar violent protest had occurred in Kolkata on November 28. The actions in Agartala were deemed a violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
