Dengue Claims 32 Lives in a Week
The dengue outbreak in the country shows no signs of abating, with the number of infections rising alongside fatalities. Hospitals are facing increased pressure due to the surge in patients.
According to the Directorate General of Health Services' (DGHS) dengue report, during the current week (November 30 to December 6), 32 deaths and 4,276 hospital admissions have been recorded due to dengue.
A breakdown of the past week's statistics shows that-
On November 30, 3 died and 675 hospitalized
December 1: 6 died and 882 hospitalized
December 2: 3 died and 705 hospitalized
December 3: 7 died and 629 hospitalized
December 4: 5 died and 629 hospitalized
December 5: 5 died and 570 hospitalized
December 6: 3 died and 186 hospitalized
So far this year, 95,070 people have been admitted to hospitals due to dengue, among whom 92,200 have recovered and been discharged. However, 517 people have succumbed to the disease.
Dr. Atiqur Rahman, a prominent medical expert at DMCH noted that dengue is no longer a seasonal issue but persists year-round, with cases spiking during rainy periods. He emphasized the need for mosquito repellent use, alongside consistent awareness campaigns by city corporations. Public vigilance is equally important.
Entomologist Dr. Manzur Chowdhury stated that merely imposing fines and increasing public awareness will not suffice for mosquito control. Proper surveys must be conducted, and effective measures implemented by skilled personnel.
It is worth noting that 2023 saw the highest dengue toll in the country's history, with 321,179 reported cases and 1,705 fatalities.
