Supreme Court Upholds Dismissal of 5 Cases Against Dr. Yunus
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld the High Court's verdict canceling proceedings in five labor law cases filed against Nobel laureate economist and caretaker government chief advisor, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
On Sunday, December 8, a three-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Senior Justice Ashfaqul Islam, delivered the ruling.
During the hearing, Additional Attorney General Anik R. Haque represented the state, while Barrister Mustafizur Rahman Khan appeared on behalf of Dr. Yunus.
According to Barrister Khan, the five separate cases were filed against Dr. Yunus in 2019 in a labor court while he was serving as the chairman of Grameen Telecom. Additionally, a defamation case was filed against him in 2010.
He further explained that following petitions by Dr. Yunus, the High Court issued separate rulings in 2011 and 2019, asking why the proceedings in these cases should not be declared illegal. After hearing the petitions, the High Court canceled the proceedings of these cases on October 24, 2023. The state subsequently appealed against this decision, leading to today's verdict from the highest court.
The five cases filed in the labor court in 2019 alleged unlawful termination of employees, reportedly in connection with a proposed trade union at Grameen Telecom.
