35 Bangladeshis Detained from a Malaysian Garment Factory
Malaysia's Immigration Department has detained 50 migrant workers for working illegally at a garment factory, among whom 35 are Bangladeshi nationals.
According to a statement from the Malaysian Immigration Department on Saturday (14 December), the raid took place on the night of 11 December at around 9:30 pm in a garment factory located in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. The operation was carried out by officials and personnel from the Intelligence and Special Operations Division.
The statement further mentioned that the operation was based on public complaints and intelligence gathered over the past two weeks. During the raid, a 46-year-old Bangladeshi man was apprehended, suspected of being the factory's manager. He is accused of illegally employing foreign workers, and a case has been filed against him.
Additionally, 34 Bangladeshi men and 15 Burmese women were arrested from the factory. All detainees are aged between 20 to 60 years.
During the raid, 40 identification cards and various sewing equipment were seized. The garment factory has reportedly been operational for the past two years.
The Bangladeshi man suspected of being the manager has been arrested under Sections 55B and 55E of the Malaysian Immigration Act 1969/63 for his offenses. The remaining detainees were arrested under Section 6(3) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Section 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963. They have been taken to the Bukit Jalil Immigration Depot for further questioning.
