Interim Government’s Chief Advisor, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, is traveling to Cairo on Thursday (December 19) to attend the 11th D-8 Summit.

According to the Chief Advisor’s Deputy Press Secretary, Apurba Jahangir, Dr. Yunus will depart Dhaka early Wednesday morning (December 18) for Cairo.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Dr. Yunus is likely to hold several meetings on the sidelines of the summit, and preparations for these are underway.

This week’s 48th meeting of the D-8 Commission in Cairo marks a significant moment for the D-8 organization. The main discussions will take place over the next few days, culminating in the 21st Session of the D-8 Council of Foreign Ministers on December 18 and the much-anticipated 11th D-8 Summit on December 19.

During these meetings, leaders will work on strengthening economic cooperation and outlining a shared vision for sustainable development among member countries.

The D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation, also known as Developing-8, was established to promote mutual development collaboration among its member states: Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey.

Dr. Yunus will join other leaders at the summit, including Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

Shehbaz Sharif will visit Cairo from December 18–20 to participate in the summit.

The D-8 organization was officially established on June 15, 1997, through the Istanbul Declaration during a summit of heads of state or government to promote economic cooperation.

Indonesia will assume the D-8 chairmanship for the 2026–2027 term, taking over from Egypt. Its tenure as chair will begin on January 1, 2026.

The D-8 summit’s theme is “Investing in Youth and Supporting Small and Medium Enterprises: Shaping Tomorrow’s Economy.” It highlights the organization’s focus on youth and MSMEs in shaping the future economy.

The summit will also emphasize the D-8’s growing role in raising global awareness about the situation in Palestine, especially in Gaza, where Israeli aggression continues.

Dr. Yunus was invited by Egypt to participate in the summit, which underscores the importance of his leadership and Bangladesh's role in the D-8.
