Professor Ali Riaz, head of the Constitutional Reform Commission has stated that political parties must demonstrate determination to advance reform efforts. He emphasized that consensus is essential for moving Bangladesh forward. The people and political parties aspire to a democratic system, citizen rights, and decentralization of power.

Speaking at a dialogue titled "Unity, Reform, Election" organized by the Forum for Bangladesh Studies at the Krishibid Institution in the capital on Friday (27 December) morning, Ali Riaz made this call.

Ali Riaz remarked that reforming laws alone is not sufficient, and even drafting a good constitution will not guarantee constitutional rights. Political forces need to be resolute in driving these reforms forward.

He further noted that a state system needs to be established where accountability is the foundational principle. Without accountability, human dignity cannot be upheld under any circumstances.

Commenting on the current phase of democratic struggle, the head of the Constitutional Reform Commission said, "The basis of unity, and what kind of unity we want, must be determined. The unity of the past—against fascism or authoritarian rule—was only the beginning. The unity we need to establish now should address the creation of an accountable state system and an electoral system that truly reflects the people's will. Such a system would make centralized power structures impossible and enable institutions to fulfil their responsibilities comprehensively."

Ali Riaz believes that advancing the areas where consensus has been reached is crucial for addressing these issues.
