British MP of Bangladeshi origin, Rupa Huq, criticized the recent 12th National Parliamentary Election, stating that holding elections hastily could be dangerous for Bangladesh. She made these remarks at a reception in Dhaka on Wednesday (January 9).

Rupa Huq emphasized that the UK desires a genuinely transparent election in Bangladesh, but necessary structural reforms must be in place. Hastily organized elections could pose risks for the country.

Reflecting on her previous visit to Bangladesh in May of the past year for a UN meeting, Rupa Huq noted, "Back then, I saw a '1.0 Bangladesh,' and now I see a '2.0 Bangladesh.' In May, the only images I saw everywhere were of Hasina and Mujib. This is not a good practice. I saw statues everywhere, which seemed odd. Bangladesh is an emerging country. Though smaller than the UK, it has a dynamic young workforce that should be utilized in state reform."

She mentioned that while she observes elections in various countries, Bangladesh has never invited her to monitor its elections. She remarked that the January 7 election was not a real election but a staged one. Professor Yunus assured that within a year, a proper election could be expected, emphasizing the need for necessary frameworks for a genuinely transparent election. Any rush in this process could be hazardous for Bangladesh.

Referring to British Minister and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's niece, Tulip Siddiq, Rupa Huq said, "Information related to corruption about a colleague has been presented in the British Parliament. This involves the money of the people of Bangladesh. In the UK, we have laws and institutions to deal with corruption, but they are often not enforced for various reasons. Ensuring their application is crucial."

Discussing the July uprising, she stated that many people were shot and killed in July and August, including students like Abu Sayeed. These acts are not just crimes but crimes against humanity.

It is noteworthy that Rupa Huq, a visiting member of the UK Parliament, was honored at a reception held at Atish Dipankar University of Science and Technology on Wednesday afternoon. The event featured Mohammad Shamsul Alam Liton, President of the University’s Board of Trustees, as the chief guest; former State Minister for Education and Director of the University’s Skill Development Institute ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon as an honored guest; and Md. Kamruzzaman Litu, Secretary of the University’s Board of Trustees, as a special guest. The event was presided over by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Md. Jahangir Alam, and attended by faculty, students, and participants of the July-August movement.
