Family Members of BDR Massacre Victims End Shahbagh Protest, Traffic Resumes
Family members of the victims of the 2009 BDR (Bangladesh Rifles) massacre, who had been protesting for a reinvestigation into the incident, ended their roadblock at Shahbagh after two hours on Thursday, January 9. The protest had disrupted traffic in the area, but with the end of the blockade at around 3:15 pm, traffic flow resumed.
Mahin Sorkar stated that although they have left Shahbagh, the protest will continue at Shaheed Minar. He warned that if the government does not make a declaration within two hours, the government will be held responsible for any untoward incident.
The protest began around 1:30 pm when the family members and supporters gathered at Shahbagh, blocking the intersection and creating a traffic jam. The protestors, numbering between 600 to 700, raised slogans and demanded a fair trial for those responsible for the BDR massacre. They vowed to keep fighting until justice is served.
Shahbagh Police Station's officer-in-charge, Md Khaled Munzur, reported that the dismissed BDR members and their families had been protesting for the second day, continuing their roadblock, which halted traffic in the area. Police had been deployed to maintain control during the demonstration.
Earlier in the day, former BDR members, dismissed following the rebellion, held a press conference at the Central Shaheed Minar. They criticized the trial of the Pilkhana massacre, calling it a sham, and demanded the cancellation of false charges and the release of imprisoned members. They expressed frustration over the cancellation of a scheduled court session in Keraniganj, which they perceived as part of a conspiracy.
The protesters reiterated that the Pilkhana massacre was a premeditated act, and BDR members were victims of a national conspiracy. They declared that their protest would continue until their three main demands were met: a reinvestigation into the BDR massacre, the reinstatement of dismissed members, and the release of prisoners.
On Wednesday, January 8, former BDR members also protested at Shahbagh, marching with seven demands, including the reinvestigation of the massacre, reinstatement of the dismissed members, and the release of those imprisoned. The protesters marched from the Shaheed Minar to the Chief Advisor's residence but were stopped by police at Shahbagh Police Station. With police intervention, a delegation submitted a memorandum of their demands to Dr Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor, and also presented the document at Jamuna.
The protesters warned that if their demands were not addressed by Thursday, they would continue their protests and roadblocks at Shahbagh and other locations.
Additional demands included determining the true cause of death for BDR members in remand, compensating the families of the deceased, ensuring the independence of the commission investigating the incident, incorporating the affected BDR members' demands into the July revolution declaration, and declaring February 25 as Military Murder Day.
