BTRC Unveils Flexible Mobile Internet Packages: Hourly Plans Now Available!
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has lifted the limit on 40 package offers for mobile internet. From now on, customers can purchase packages based on hourly usage. Additionally, operators can offer various packages tailored to customer needs for different durations.
On Sunday (January 12), BTRC issued new guidelines for mobile phone operators regarding data and data-related packages, allowing these new facilities for mobile internet packages. As a result, the conditions imposed on operators for internet package sales have been relaxed after about 15 months.
In the latest directive issued by BTRC in October 2023, the maximum number of packages was limited to 40, with durations set at 7 days, 30 days, and unlimited (no specific duration), which had drawn dissatisfaction from the operators.
Under the new guidelines, operators can offer three types of packages:
Regular Packages: Open to all customers.
Customer-Specific Special Packages: Based on usage and average revenue per customer for specific categories of customers.
Research and Development Packages: Offered to customers for market testing and understanding trends.
The minimum duration for regular packages is 15 days, for customer-specific special packages is 3 days, and for research and development packages is 7 days.
Beyond these three package types, operators can design packages according to their plans, considering customer interests and socio-economic contexts. BTRC has allowed the introduction of hourly and 1 to 3-day packages under this scope. According to the guidelines, operators can offer packages with a maximum of 200 MB per hour, 3 GB per day, 5 GB for two days, and 8 GB for three days.
There will also be a "Flexible Plan" allowing customers to choose packages according to their convenience, alongside unlimited packages, though a specific time frame must be defined for these. Customers must be notified via SMS one day before the expiry of any package.
However, packages based on hours or minutes cannot be offered from midnight to 6 AM.
If any data remains unused after the expiration of a data package, it can be "carried forward." That means if a customer renews the same package before it expires, the unused data will be available for use in the next package.
