In the much-discussed murder case of Syeda Tania Mahbub, also known as model Tinni (24), the court has acquitted former Member of Parliament for Barishal-2, Golam Faruq Avi.

On Tuesday (January 14), the verdict was announced by Judge Shahinur Akter of Dhaka's Second Additional District and Sessions Judge Court.

State lawyer Syed Md. Abu Jafar Rizvi expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict, indicating that a decision on filing an appeal will be made after reviewing the full judgment.

Golam Faruq Avi remains absconding. His court-appointed lawyer, Shah Ilias Ratan, expressed satisfaction with the verdict.

According to case documents, Tinni's body was found on November 10, 2002, near the 11th pillar of the No. 1 China-Bangladesh Friendship Bridge on the Buriganga River in Keraniganj. The next day, a case was filed against an unknown accused by then Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Md. Safi Uddin of Keraniganj Police Station.

The first investigation officer of the case was then Sub-Inspector (SI) Md. Kaiyum Ali Sardar. After Tinni's photo was published in newspapers, a relative named Sujan identified her. The case was later transferred to the CID as a sensational case on November 24, 2002, with then CID Inspector Fazlur Rahman taking over the investigation.

Subsequent investigators included CID Inspector Sujaul Haque, Assistant Police Superintendent (ASP) Golam Mostafa, ASP Arman Ali, ASP Kamal Krishna Bhardwaj, and ASP Mozammel Haque. The final investigation officer, Mozammel Haque, submitted the charge sheet to the court.

The charge sheet in Tinni's murder case listed 41 witnesses and 22 pieces of evidence. On November 8, 2008, the final investigation officer, Mozammel Haque, submitted a charge sheet to the court, naming former student leader and MP Golam Faruq Avi as the sole accused.

Although initial investigations implicated former Jatiya Party MP Golam Faruq Avi, police were unable to apprehend him. On July 14, 2010, the Seventh Additional District and Sessions Judge of Dhaka framed charges against Avi in the absence of the accused in the murder and body concealment case.

The verdict for this high-profile murder case was initially scheduled for November 15, 2021. However, when Tinni's father and uncle expressed their wish to testify on that day, the court deferred the verdict and set a new date for additional testimony.
