DU Cancels FF's Grandchildren Quota from Admission Test
The quota for the grandchildren of freedom fighters has been removed in this year's admission exams at Dhaka University (DU). This year's admission exams only have a quota for the children of freedom fighters. The university's Vice-Chancellor, Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan, has described this as a rational reform aimed at making the institution more inclusive.
Dr Khan emphasized this point while inspecting the DU exam centre on January 25, stating, "We aim to transform Dhaka University into a universal institution."
On the same day, the admission exams for the Arts, Law, and Social Sciences units of the 2024-25 academic session were held. The exam took place from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm, simultaneously in Dhaka and seven other divisional cities. In Dhaka alone, 71,004 candidates appeared, while 54,496 candidates participated in the divisional cities.
This year, there are 2,934 seats in the Arts, Law, and Social Sciences Units, with 125,500 applicants. In other words, 43 candidates are competing for each seat.
Although students expressed mixed reactions to the exam questions, parents were generally pleased with the overall situation, including the reform of the quota system.
In the previous academic year (2023-24), 102,000 candidates sat for the exam in this unit, with 10,275 passing.
