Power occupiers do not understand the value of language and culture. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said this while inaugurating the month long Amar Ekushey Book Fair at the Bangla Academy premises on Thursday.

Earlier the premier handed over the Bangla Academy Literature Award to the recipients.

This year the fair is organized in the 5 lakh square feet areas of Bangla Academy and Suhrawardy Udyan.

The Suhrawardy Udyan part of the book fair is divided into 12 yards. In the academy premises 92 organizations were provided 136 units and in the Suhrawardy Udyan part 363 organizations were provided 583 units. In total 455 organizations were provided 719 units. Besides, 24 publishing organizations were provided 24 pavilions including Bangla Academy.

The fair will remain open from 3 pm to 9 pm from February 1 to 28 except the holidays. It will remain open from 11 am to 9 pm in the holidays and from 8 am to 8:30 pm on February 21. Seminars will be held at the central stage at 4 pm everyday from February 2 to 28. Besides month long cultural programs will be organized in the afternoon. Moreover Bangla Academy has taken initiatives to hold children’s painting, general knowledge, instant discussion and musical competition.

There will also be arrangements for International Literature Conference from February 22-23. 15 poets, writers and intellectuals from 8 countries will participate in the conference including Bangladesh, France, Spain, Nepal, Sri Lanka and India.

In the inaugural program presided over by Bangla Academy President Professor Emeritus Anisuzzaman, Minister for Cultural Affairs Asaduzzaman Noor, Bangla Academy Director General Dr. Shamsuzzaman Khan and others also spoke on the occasion.
