Atiqul Islam elected DNCC Mayor

In the mayoral post by-election of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Awami League nominated candidate Atiqul Islam was elected unofficially. The post fell vacant following the death of mayor Annisul Huq.

According to the declared results of 1295 voting centers Atiqul Islam with symbol of ‘boat’ got 8 lakh 39 thousand 302 votes. His nearest competing candidate Jatiya Party’s Shafin Ahmed with symbol of ‘plough’ bagged 52 thousand 429 votes.

Returning Officer Abul Kashem declared the result at 1:30 am on Friday.

The number of total voters in DNCC is 23 lakh 45 thousand 374. Total 31.05 percent votes were casted. The information came through the result collection and dissemination center of Election Commission set up at Bangabandhu International Conference Center in the capital.

Total five candidates competed for the mayor post in DNCC by-election. The candidates were- Atiqul Islam of Awami League, Shafin Ahmed of Jatiya Party, Anisur Rahman of National Peoples Party, Shahin Khan of Progressive Democratic Party and Independent candidate Abdur Rahim.

The voting took place from 8 am to 4 pm on Thursday. In this election BNP and its affiliated parties along with the left leaning parties did not take part.

As well as the by-election of DNCC, voting also took place for Ward Councilors post in the newly included 18 wards in each City Corporations. Besides, seven contestants took part in the by-election of DNCC 21 number ward.
