Convener of ‘wasar nirapad pani andalan’ (Safe wasa water movement) Mizanur Rahman has alleged that water crisis in capital’s Jurain area has increased after the attempt to make Dhaka WASA Managing Director drink ‘sharbat’ made from wasa water.

He said, now the water crisis has increased than any other time of previous period. This crisis has to be solved soon. The government will have to bear the responsibility if any unavoidable incident happens or anger is created among the people in the area due to water crisis.

He said these at a public hearing organized by ‘wasar nirapad pani andalan’ at National Press Club on Tuesday. At that time he placed five-point demand for drinkable wasa water. Different organization leaders and professional bodies expressed solidarity with the demand at that time. In the public hearing people from different parts of the capital brought samples of supply water from their home along with them.

Member Secretary of oil-gas-mineral resources and electricity-port protection national committee Professor Anu Mohammad took part in the public hearing and said, at present Bangladesh stands on different data. Those reports said 98 per cent people take drinkable water. But we are not in that percentage. We are under 2 per cent. So we have to drink water by boiling or filtering.

He also said, the most important resource of Bangladesh is water. We are not getting safe water though Dhaka is surrounded by rivers. There is no such example in the world that natural resources are damaged in this way.

He also said, WASA is interested about implementing projects rather supplying safe water. To purify Buriganga water 1.5 thousand crore taka was spent but the water has polluted more. Now a project has been taken to supply water after purifying it from the Meghna according to the suggestion of ADB. The cost of the project is 6 thousand crore taka.
